This collection centers on the children of Pliny and Ruth Cutler Merrick, their grandchildren, and friends. It consists of two folders covering the years 1776 to 1903, one containing forty-two items of family correspondence, and the other thirty-four business papers. The former consists of correspondence concerning Worcester social affairs, letters written to Frances Fiske Lincoln (Mrs. Daniel Waldo) (1819-1873), trips to Nantasket by Sarah Reed Merrick (1832-1854), descriptions of the expansion of Worcester by Frances Williams Allen (1824- ), instructions on deportment by Pliny Merrick (1755-1814) to his daughter Maria Merrick Allen (1790- ), several letters in verse by Nancy Merrick Miller (Mrs. Henry) (1797-1843), correspondence reflecting efforts by Thornton Merrick (1803-1855) and Samuel Allen, Jr. (1789-1863) to succeed in business, and several pages of extensive genealogical notes compiled by Alfred G. Waite in 1950. The business papers include four sermons by Pliny Merrick Sr. from 1778 to 1780, notes of admission to the bar, fourteen land deeds concerning Brookfield, bonds, suits, warrants, deeds on church pews and burial plots, land appraisals, bank shares, and the will of Francis Merrick (1792- ).

Samuel Allen (1757-1830) was the son of James and Mary Adams Allen of Boston, Massachusetts. He came to Worcester in 1776 and became the assistant of his brother Joseph Allen (1749-1827), then Clerk of the Courts. From 1781 to 1830, Samuel Allen served as Treasurer of the County of Worcester. Samuel Allen (1789-1863) was the son of Joseph and the nephew of Samuel. Pliny Merrick (1755-1814) of Brookfield, Mass., graduated from Harvard in 1776 but chose to give up the ministry in 1784 to become a lawyer. He was an extensive land owner and also served in the state senate. Merrick married Ruth Cutler (1770-1841) of Brookfield and they raised seven children, including Pliny Merrick (1794-1867) of Worcester, district attorney and State Supreme Court Justice.
